When using the myColorado app, your data is protected through the use of industry-leading multi-factor authentication (MFA) and data encryption for privacy and security throughout the app. There are only two instances in which your data could be shared securely with a third party while using the app:

During Account Registration: As part of the registration process, the data you provide is used to verify your identity by comparing it to the data in the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles’ database and performing "Customer Identification" checks commonly used by banks and other financial institutions. These third-party identity verification services are highly secure, regulated by the federal government, and the data is never stored by them since it is only used for the length of time it takes for you to register your account.

To Make a Payment or Store Payment Information: Once your account has been created, your data is never shared again with third parties unless you choose the option to process a payment or store your payment information. For these services, the myColorado app uses a payment processor that is industry certified at the highest level (PCI Level 1). The app must provide your personal payment information to process a payment in the same manner that any other checkout process requires at the time of purchase or point of sale.

With the exception of the two momentary and widely accepted scenarios noted above, all other activity and data remains private and securely encrypted throughout myColorado, and is specific to only your use within the app and the incorporated state services. The myColorado team and State of Colorado take the privacy and protection of your personal data very seriously. Yes, myColorado allows you to hide information that is not pertinent to your use. For instance, if you are entering a restaurant that serves alcohol, you can choose to hide your address and even your birthdate using the toggle settings in the app; there is an indicator that will let the merchant see that you are over 21.

Can I add multiple IDs to this app?

My Digital ID looks different. What has changed?

Starting in May, 2020, the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles is rolling out a design update to improve the readability of driver licenses, identification cards, and other credentials. The Colorado Digital ID has been updated to reflect the DMV's new design.

The updated design provides more space and a slightly larger font. All of the information on current Colorado driver licenses and ID cards is on the front side of the new version except “Hair Color” and “Weight” (which were removed because they can change dramatically during the renewal cycle) and “Previous Type” (which was moved to the back side of the ID). "Previous Type" refers to the credential holder’s previous ID type such as Adult, Minor, Temporary, etc.

Will first responders and businesses know that the new Digital ID design is genuine?

The DMV is notifying first responders and retailers that they'll start to see the new driver license / ID design in early May, 2020, so they're aware that these credentials are not fake.

My new physical driver license has a star in the upper right corner, but my Digital ID does not. Should they look the same?

The new physical driver licenses and ID cards have a star in the top right corner indicating that the document is a REAL ID. This allows it to be used to enter federal buildings and for air travel. The Colorado Digital ID is not yet REAL ID compliant, so a star does not display in the digital version.

ADA Accessibility

Do I need to allow my camera access for this app?

Yes, the camera needs access to take a photo for identity verification.

How can I distinguish the front from the back of my ID or license?

Your ID or license will have etched lines that are raised and can be felt on the front, while the back is completely flat and smooth. In order to orient the document put the Customer Identification Number on the right. It is etched vertically about an eighth of an inch from the edge, between two raised lines, and about one and a half inches long, on the left side of the front of the license.

When I create an account, how do I scan my ID or driver license?

Lay your ID or license in a landscape position, smooth side up, with the etched tactile Customer Identification Number, on the right side, on a flat surface that is dark in color and not near an uncovered window to minimize glare. Place your phone on top of your ID with the left top corners aligned with each other. Lift the phone straight up about six inches. Keep your fingers on the left two corners of the ID to keep it stable, and hold the phone level and still for about five seconds to allow the barcode to be scanned. You will feel a vibration on the iPhone, which indicates the scan is complete. On the Android, the phone will say, my Colorado create account. If your scan is not successful, move the phone slightly towards you and try again. If you are still unsuccessful, reorient your phone and ID and retry.

After I have created an account and entered my login information, how do I take a picture of the front of my ID?

Orient your license or ID and phone in landscape position. Your ID will have the etched side up and the bar code on the left. Your phone will be face up, and the camera will be closest to the top of your ID. Use the upper left corners of the license and phone to help you align. Make sure your camera chooser says, back facing and that it is approximately six inches above the ID. The photo is not taken automatically on the iPhone, so you will have to flick to the take picture button and double tap. After the photo is taken, select use photo, as the phone will tell you whether you have captured an acceptable picture. With Android phones, the picture will automatically be taken after about 10 seconds.

Is the second picture of the back of my ID taken the same way as the first?

The only difference between the first and second pictures of the back is that you have the phone in a landscape position for the second picture. Make sure the camera is back facing.

How do I take a facial snapshot?

Make sure your phone is using your front camera to take the picture. Hold your phone in portrait position, with both hands. Extend your arms out in front of your face with your elbows straight, hold steady and flick to the take picture button and double tap to take the photo. The app will say processing and then let you know if you have successfully captured an acceptable photo. Once you have captured a picture of your face, proceed to submit.

Will I have to repeat the photo process?

No, once you have successfully taken photos of the front and back of your ID or license, and your facial snapshot, your identity will be verified. After this is successful your account will be created and you should not have to go through the process again.

How do I set up my fingerprint or facial recognition to expedite my login?

After you create an account and log in for the first time, select the Touch/Face ID login and toggle to the ON position. This will allow you to use fingerprint or facial recognition the next time you log in.
